Description

Beginning at the stylomastoid foramen, the facial nerve (CN VII) is tracked as it enters the substance of the parotid gland posterolateral to the mandibular ramus and divides into its temporofacial and cervicofacial divisions, forming the parotid plexus (pes anserinus). From this branching point, the temporal, zygomatic, buccal, marginal mandibular, and cervical branches sweep anteriorly in layered arcs across the lateral face, with the temporal rami ascending superior to the zygomatic arch and the marginal mandibular branch coursing along the inferior border of the mandible toward the depressor anguli oris. As the animation progresses, branches are mapped in sequence over the superficial mimetic musculature, clarifying their generally superficial course relative to the masseter and parotid duct while remaining in close association with the parotid fascia and adjacent vascular landmarks within the gland. Parotid-region facial nerve anatomy is where function meets surgical risk. Even small variations in the course and interconnections of the buccal and zygomatic branches can change which movements of the upper lip and eyelid are affected after a parotidectomy, facelift (rhytidectomy), or penetrating cheek injury.
