Arising from the common carotid artery in the upper neck, the external carotid artery ascends anteromedial to the sternocleidomastoid and then courses superiorly toward the parotid region, where its terminal branches spread across the lateral face. As the sequence progresses, named branches are traced in order, including the superior thyroid, lingual, and facial arteries running anteriorly, with the occipital and posterior auricular arteries turning posteriorly toward the scalp and auricle. Near the level of the neck of the mandible, the vessel divides into the maxillary artery (deep, medial to the mandibular ramus) and the superficial temporal artery (more superficial, anterior to the ear), with facial branches tracking over the masseter and into the perioral and nasal regions.
