Description
Beginning near the jugular foramen at the cranial base, the internal jugular vein descends within the carotid sheath, lateral to the internal carotid artery superiorly and the common carotid artery inferiorly, with the vagus nerve running posteriorly between them. As the sequence tracks along the lateral cervical region, the vein remains deep to the sternocleidomastoid and superficial to the prevertebral fascia, widening at the superior bulb just below the skull base before continuing toward its union with the subclavian vein posterior to the sternal end of the clavicle. Tributaries enter along the course, typically including the facial, lingual, pharyngeal, and superior and middle thyroid veins, reinforcing how variable venous inflow can be from the suprahyoid to the infrahyoid neck. Thin-walled and positional. Clinical relevance is immediate. Central venous catheter placement via the internal jugular depends on understanding its lateral relationship to the carotid artery at different cervical levels, and the animation’s stepwise ascent clarifies why head rotation, neck extension, and the angle of needle entry alter the relative positions of vein and artery in the carotid triangle.
