Centered within the adult male thorax, the heart appears in situ between the lungs, sitting posterior to the sternum and anterior to the vertebral column, with its apex directed inferiorly and to the left. Sequential transparency and cutaway layers track blood through the right atrium and right ventricle into the pulmonary trunk and right and left pulmonary arteries, then back via the pulmonary veins to the left atrium and left ventricle. From there, flow continues into the ascending aorta, aortic arch, and descending thoracic aorta, while the superior and inferior venae cavae return systemic venous blood to the right atrium; major named branches (brachiocephalic trunk, left common carotid, left subclavian) are positioned superiorly and laterally off the arch as the camera maintains a body-centered orientation. Coronary arteries and cardiac veins can be appreciated along the anterior interventricular and atrioventricular grooves as they wrap the epicardial surface. Linking pulmonary and systemic circuits in a continuous animated loop clarifies pressure-dependent directionality that still images often blur, including why right-sided obstruction produces venous congestion while left-sided dysfunction backs up into pulmonary veins.
