Description

Sweeping across the epicardial surface of an adult male heart, the coronary arterial tree comes into view from its origins at the aortic root, with the right and left coronary arteries arising from the corresponding aortic sinuses and immediately tracking within the atrioventricular (coronary) sulcus. Anteriorly, the left anterior descending artery (anterior interventricular branch) descends in the anterior interventricular sulcus toward the apex while diagonal branches angle laterally across the left ventricle, and the circumflex artery courses leftward and posteriorly to give obtuse marginal branches along the lateral wall. On the right, the right coronary artery runs inferiorly in the right atrioventricular groove, issuing acute marginal branches to the right ventricular free wall before curving toward the crux, where the posterior descending artery often continues in the posterior interventricular sulcus. Flow direction and branching sequence are animated. Coronary anatomy determines ischemic territory. A proximal LAD occlusion endangers the anterior wall and septum, while a dominant right coronary artery supplies the inferior wall through the PDA and can involve the atrioventricular nodal branch, a common setup for bradyarrhythmia during inferior myocardial infarction. The animated progression clarifies how epicardial vessels wrap from anterior to posterior surfaces and how branch points map to myocardial regions, which is harder to internalize from a single static projection.
