Description
Beginning at the occipital bone and descending along the cervical vertebral column, the sequence reveals the deep posterior neck muscles layered beneath the trapezius and splenius, including semispinalis capitis and cervicis, multifidus, rotatores, and the suboccipital group (rectus capitis posterior major and minor, obliquus capitis superior and inferior). These short muscles span between spinous and transverse processes from C2 through the lower cervical segments, with fiber directions that shift from inferolateral to superomedial as the dissection progresses deeper. Superiorly, the suboccipital triangle forms between the obliquus capitis muscles and rectus capitis posterior major, closely related to the posterior arch of C1 and the groove for the vertebral artery. Planes separate in sequence. Deep cervical musculature matters because it is where segmental motion is controlled and where pain generators often hide. Whiplash-associated disorders, cervicogenic headache, and C1–C2 rotation dysfunction commonly involve the suboccipital muscles and the small transversospinalis group that stabilizes each motion segment, and the animation makes those short intersegmental spans clear in a way a static plate rarely does.
