Centered within the middle mediastinum, the adult male heart sits posterior to the sternum and costal cartilages, anterior to the vertebral column, and slightly left of the median plane with its apex directed inferolaterally toward the left fifth intercostal space. The animation layers the myocardium and chambers, bringing the right atrium and right ventricle into the more anterior position while the left atrium lies posterior and the left ventricle forms most of the left cardiac border. Superiorly, the sequence traces the roots of the great vessels, with the ascending aorta and pulmonary trunk emerging anteriorly from the ventricles and the superior vena cava entering the right atrium on the right.
