Centered in the middle mediastinum, the adult male heart sits obliquely behind the sternum with its base directed posteriorly and to the right and its apex pointing anteroinferiorly toward the left fifth intercostal space. The animation brings the myocardium into context within the thoracic cavity, framing the right atrium and ventricle anteriorly and slightly to the right, while the left atrium lies more posterior and the left ventricle forms most of the left cardiac border. Superiorly, the ascending aorta and pulmonary trunk rise from the ventricles, with the superior vena cava entering the right atrium from above and the inferior vena cava coursing to it from below as the diaphragm domes upward beneath the pericardial sac. Everything moves in sequence.
