Description
Nestled in the middle mediastinum, the adult male heart appears behind the sternum and costal cartilages, flanked laterally by the lungs and seated on the central tendon of the diaphragm. As the animation progresses, the pericardial sac and epicardial surface give way to the myocardium, with the right atrium and right ventricle lying more anterior, and the left atrium and left ventricle positioned more posterior and to the left. Superiorly, the ascending aorta and pulmonary trunk rise from the base, while the superior and inferior venae cavae enter the right atrium on the right side of the thorax. The apex points inferoanteriorly toward the left fifth intercostal space. Clinical orientation in the thoracic cavity matters. Pericardiocentesis, emergency thoracotomy, and median sternotomy all depend on understanding how the heart sits posterior to the sternum yet left-shifted, with the right ventricle forming most of the anterior cardiac surface and the left ventricle driving the left cardiac border. Animated sequencing also clarifies the pump cycle in context: atrial filling and contraction precede ventricular systole, and the changing chamber contours make it easier to map surface anatomy to auscultation points (aortic at the right second intercostal space, pulmonic at the left second, tricuspid along the lower left sternal border, mitral at the apex).
