Layered thoracic anatomy comes into focus as the male rib cage and sternum frame the lungs beneath, with the clavicles and thoracic vertebrae bracketing the superior thoracic aperture and the diaphragm forming the inferior boundary. The trachea descends in the midline and bifurcates at the carina into right and left main bronchi, which pass posterolateral to the great vessels and enter the hila on the medial lung surfaces. As the sequence progresses through simulated breathing, the lungs expand laterally against the ribs and inferiorly toward the costodiaphragmatic recess, letting you track the right lung’s superior, middle, and inferior lobes (horizontal and oblique fissures) alongside the left lung’s superior and inferior lobes separated by the oblique fissure. Pleural space relationships are emphasized. Radiographic landmarking drives the value here: fissure orientation relative to rib levels, the anterior position of the right middle lobe, and the more anteromedial lingular region of the left upper lobe are easier to grasp when the lungs move under a fixed bony thorax.
