Beginning at the cervical and lumbar segments of the vertebral column, paired spinal nerves emerge in sequence from the spinal cord as anterior (ventral) and posterior (dorsal) rootlets that converge to form mixed spinal nerves, each swelling at a dorsal root ganglion before exiting the intervertebral foramen. The animation tracks these nerves as they course laterally from the spinal canal, then divide into posterior rami running dorsally toward the deep back musculature and skin, and anterior rami passing anterolaterally toward the body wall and limbs. In the cervical region, the nerves appear in close relation to the pedicles and facet joints and then sweep laterally, while in the lumbar region their exit points sit inferior to thicker laminae and larger transverse processes. Motion clarifies the repeating segmental pattern. Radicular pain makes this anatomy clinically concrete. A posterolateral lumbar disc herniation typically compresses the traversing nerve root within the lateral recess, while foraminal stenosis from facet hypertrophy or spondylolisthesis narrows the intervertebral foramen and irritates the exiting root, patterns that are hard to grasp without seeing the roots, ganglion, and foramen aligned in space.
