Description
Beginning at the medulla oblongata and descending through the vertebral canal, the spinal cord appears as a tapering neural column segmented into cervical, thoracic, and lumbar regions, with the cervical and lumbosacral enlargements expanding where brachial and lumbosacral plexus outflow originates. Dorsal (posterior) rootlets and ventral (anterior) rootlets emerge in sequence from each segment, converging into spinal nerves that pass laterally toward the intervertebral foramina. As the animation progresses caudally, the cord narrows into the conus medullaris, and the lumbar and sacral roots elongate inferiorly as the cauda equina within the dural sac. Clear midline landmarks. Clinical teaching often stalls at the question of where the adult cord ends versus where the nerve roots continue, and the moving descent from cervical to lumbar levels makes that relationship hard to miss. By tracking segmental levels relative to the surrounding canal, the sequence supports explanation of cervical spondylotic myelopathy, thoracic cord compression from disc herniation, and the logic behind performing lumbar puncture or spinal anesthesia below L3 to avoid direct cord injury while still accessing cerebrospinal fluid around the cauda equina.
