Seen from a posterior (dorsal) perspective, the spinal cord descends within the vertebral canal while paired dorsal and ventral rootlets converge laterally to form spinal nerve roots that exit through the intervertebral foramina between adjacent vertebrae. Segment by segment, cervical, thoracic, lumbar, sacral, and coccygeal levels are distinguished by the spacing of the foramina and the changing caliber of the cord, with the dorsal root ganglia appearing as subtle fusiform swellings just proximal to the foraminal margins. The animation tracks the bilateral symmetry of root emergence along the segmented osseous column, maintaining clear medial to lateral relationships as the roots pass from the cord toward the periphery.
