Description
Positioned deep to the posterior abdominal wall, the paired kidneys sit retroperitoneally on either side of the vertebral column, with the right kidney slightly inferior to the left because of the liver. Superior to each renal pole, the adrenal (suprarenal) glands cap the kidneys like small, triangular helmets, tucked anteromedial to the diaphragmatic crura and close to the celiac trunk region. As the sequence progresses, the camera tracks through the dorsal trunk to clarify how these organs relate to the ribs, lumbar spine, and posterior pararenal space. Depth matters here. Renal and adrenal topography drives both diagnosis and operative planning. Posterior flank pain from nephrolithiasis, perinephric abscess, or retroperitoneal hemorrhage is interpreted differently once you can visualize the kidneys’ relationship to the psoas major, quadratus lumborum, and the lower ribs, key constraints for ultrasound windows, CT interpretation, and trauma patterns.
