Description
Rotating through the posterior abdomen, the animation layers the lumbar viscera from superficial peritoneal contents to the retroperitoneum between the 12th rib superiorly and the iliac crests inferiorly. Bilateral kidneys appear lateral to the vertebral column, with the right kidney slightly inferior to the left; the suprarenal glands cap their superior poles while the ureters descend anteromedial to psoas major toward the pelvic brim. Medial to both kidneys, the abdominal aorta and inferior vena cava track along the anterior surface of the lumbar vertebral bodies, giving off renal vessels that cross toward the hila, with the ascending and descending colon framing the paracolic gutters laterally. Retroperitoneal anatomy is easy to misread in a single still. Watching the ureter’s course relative to the gonadal vessels, psoas major, and the common iliac bifurcation clarifies why a mid-ureteric stone can refer pain to the groin and why the ureter is at risk during mobilization of the colon in a left-sided colectomy.
