Description

Across the anterior male face, the animation traces venous drainage from superficial cutaneous tributaries through the superficial fascia (including the SMAS) and into deeper conduits that accompany the muscles of facial expression and the masticatory compartment. The facial vein is followed as it descends posteroinferiorly from the angular vein at the medial canthus, crossing superficial to the body of the mandible just anterior to the masseter, while deeper channels course medial to the buccinator and along the pterygoid region. Sequential layer fades clarify how the deep facial vein links the facial vein to the pterygoid venous plexus, and how the superior and inferior ophthalmic veins provide a superior pathway toward the cavernous sinus. Venous valves are sparse here. Flow direction matters. Clinical relevance comes from the connectivity. Perioral or perinasal infections within the so-called danger triangle can propagate retrograde via the angular and ophthalmic veins to the cavernous sinus, and the animation makes that route legible by showing continuity across planes that are hard to appreciate in a single frame. It also helps when teaching complications of facial fillers, where inadvertent intravascular injection and retrograde embolization follow predictable corridors near the nasolabial fold and medial canthus, and when planning incisions and flap elevation around the parotidomasseteric region to avoid troublesome venous bleeding from the retromandibular and maxillary venous systems.
