Description
Running along the medial aspect of the knee, the inferior medial genicular vein is shown curving deep to the pes anserinus and beneath the medial tibial plateau, tracking close to the joint capsule before joining the periarticular venous network. Superficially, the great saphenous vein ascends anteromedially in the leg and thigh, while deeper channels accompany the anterior tibial, posterior tibial, and popliteal vessels in the popliteal fossa. Arteries appear in parallel, with the femoral artery continuing as the popliteal artery and giving off genicular branches around the distal femur and proximal tibia. Dark blue venous pathways contrast against transparent skin and soft tissues. Clean orientation. Genicular veins matter because they link superficial drainage (including tributaries to the great saphenous vein) with deep venous drainage at the popliteal vein, and they sit in the same operative corridor used for medial approaches to the knee. This is where iatrogenic bleeding can surprise you during procedures such as medial meniscal repair, high tibial osteotomy, or harvesting of hamstring tendons (semitendinosus and gracilis) at the pes anserinus, where small periarticular veins are easily avulsed. The tight curve under the medial tibial plateau also helps explain why periarticular venous congestion can accompany post-traumatic synovitis and why targeted cautery or ligation sometimes becomes necessary in revision surgery. Course directors can drop this plate into lower-limb anatomy, vascular anatomy, or orthopedic modules to teach the relationship between genicular vessels, the tibial condyles, and the popliteal fossa. It also fits well in operative technique manuals or patient-facing education on knee surgery that needs accurate superficial versus deep venous context without losing the inferior medial genicular vein in a busy field.
