Description
Arising from the venous plexus around the knee, the inferior medial genicular vein is shown in medial profile as it curves beneath the medial femoral condyle and tracks along the inferomedial margin of the joint capsule. Proximally, it lies deep to the pes anserinus tendons (sartorius, gracilis, semitendinosus) and runs adjacent to the medial head of gastrocnemius, while more anteriorly it approaches the medial tibial condyle and the medial patellar retinaculum. Superficial tributaries from the medial leg communicate with deeper venules here, and the vessel’s course aligns with the genicular anastomosis that ultimately drains toward the popliteal venous system. Small, variable. A medial knee view matters because this vein sits in the corridor used for medial arthrotomy, meniscal repair, and exposure of the medial collateral ligament, where unexpected bleeding often comes from genicular branches rather than the larger saphenous system.
