Description
Oriented from the medial side of the distal thigh and knee, the superior lateral genicular vein is traced as it courses transversely across the distal femur toward the lateral epicondyle. Proximally it lies in the perigenicular venous plexus adjacent to the femoral vessels, then passes posterior to the suprapatellar region to communicate with the popliteal vein and companion genicular vessels. The femur provides the deep bony landmark, with the skin surface rendered to maintain spatial context between superficial and deep venous channels. Perigenicular veins matter because they form a dense collateral network around the knee that becomes clinically relevant when the popliteal vein is compressed or thrombosed, and during operative exposure around the distal femur. Orthopedic approaches to the lateral femoral condyle, fixation of distal femoral fractures, and lateral release or arthroplasty-related dissection can all place the superior lateral genicular vessels at risk, where bleeding can be brisk and obscures planes.
