Running in the deepest layer of the posterior thoracic wall, the rotatores muscles bridge from the transverse process of one thoracic vertebra to the lamina and spinous process of the vertebra immediately superior, with the rotatores breves spanning one segment and the rotatores longi spanning two. Just superficial to this level, slips of the multifidus and the long vertical columns of the erector spinae flank the spinous processes on the right and left, while the thoracic vertebral bodies remain anterior to the vertebral canal and the posterior elements. Laterally, the ribs sweep from the costotransverse region, and the medial borders of the scapulae enter the field at the upper back. Small muscles. Precise attachments.
