Description
Centered in the thorax, the heart sits slightly left of midline with the ascending aorta rising superiorly and curving into the aortic arch before continuing as the descending thoracic aorta. From the arch, the brachiocephalic trunk, left common carotid artery, and left subclavian artery course superiorly and laterally toward the neck and upper limb, while the paired brachiocephalic veins converge medially to form the superior vena cava. In the proximal upper arm, the axillary artery continues as the brachial artery along the medial bicipital groove, accompanied by the brachial veins and receiving superficial venous drainage from the basilic vein medially and cephalic vein laterally. Red arterial channels and blue venous channels maintain clear anterior relationships against a semi-transparent skin and muscle envelope. Capillary beds are hinted at peripherally. An anterior, chest-forward rendering is the workhorse view for teaching central hemodynamics and for orienting clinicians to access routes. Placement of the heart relative to the great vessels supports discussions of coronary perfusion and left ventricular outflow obstruction, and it dovetails with common procedural pathways such as internal jugular or subclavian central venous catheterization into the superior vena cava. The upper limb vasculature also maps cleanly onto practical anatomy, from brachial artery blood pressure measurement and arterial line placement to common venipuncture patterns in the superficial veins.
