Description
Anterior thoracic anatomy is rendered with a semi-transparent body wall to foreground the heart and great vessels in an adult Black woman. The right and left atria sit superior to their respective ventricles, with the right ventricle positioned more anterior and the left ventricle forming the left cardiac border. Superiorly, the ascending aorta and aortic arch give rise to the brachiocephalic trunk, left common carotid artery, and left subclavian artery, while the pulmonary trunk courses anterior to the ascending aorta before dividing into the right and left pulmonary arteries. Systemic arteries are highlighted in red and systemic veins in blue, including the superior vena cava draining into the right atrium and the subclavian and axillary vessels continuing laterally toward the shoulder and proximal upper limb. Color separation of arteries and veins makes this view a strong teaching tool for directionality of blood flow and the parallel organization of systemic outflow and venous return at the thoracic inlet. The anterior perspective also supports clinical orientation for surface projections of the heart and mediastinal great vessels, the same relationships clinicians rely on when interpreting a chest radiograph silhouette, planning central venous access via the subclavian or internal jugular approach, or explaining why an anterior myocardial infarction often reflects left anterior descending coronary artery occlusion.
