Description
Running along the superolateral aspect of the knee, the superior lateral genicular vein arcs anteriorly across the distal femur just proximal to the lateral femoral epicondyle, tracking near the lateral margin of the patella before draining toward the popliteal venous network. Superficial tributaries from the anterolateral thigh and lateral leg converge toward deeper channels, with small venules forming a reticular pattern in the subcutaneous plane. Proximally, venous pathways align with the lateral thigh course toward the femoral vein, while distally they communicate with calf veins that ascend toward the popliteal fossa. Orientation stays clearly lateral, with the highlighted vessel sweeping high across the outside surface of the femur. Clear identification of the genicular venous ring matters at the knee because these vessels mirror the arterial genicular anastomoses and define common sites of bleeding, thrombosis extension, and collateral flow when more proximal outflow is compromised. During lateral approaches to the distal femur or arthrotomy near the lateral retinaculum, small genicular veins are frequent sources of persistent oozing that can obscure the field, and their variable drainage into the popliteal vein can complicate hemostasis. Varicosities and venous reflux around the knee also tend to follow these superficial to deep connections. Small vessel, real consequences. Use this artwork in gross anatomy teaching of lower-limb vasculature, vascular surgery or orthopedics publications discussing knee exposure, or clinical education materials that explain superficial versus deep venous pathways and periarticular collateral channels around the femur and knee.
