Description
Posterior surface anatomy of an adult female is rendered with the major superficial and selected intermediate muscle bellies in clear relief from the occiput to the calcaneus. Superiorly, the trapezius overlies the cervical and upper thoracic spine, descending to the lateral clavicle and acromion while the deltoid caps the shoulder lateral to the scapular spine, and inferior to this the latissimus dorsi sweeps inferolaterally toward the humerus, framing the medial border of the scapula where the rhomboid major and minor would lie deep. Along the midline, the erector spinae columns track longitudinally on either side of the spinous processes, then the gluteus maximus dominates the posterolateral pelvis, giving way distally to the hamstring group (biceps femoris laterally, semitendinosus and semimembranosus medially) and the gastrocnemius heads that converge toward the calcaneal tendon. Fiber direction is explicit. It matters. Posterior myology like this supports teaching and clinical communication because many symptomatic conditions map to these lines of pull and tendon insertions. Scapular dyskinesis often reflects imbalance between trapezius, serratus anterior (anterior but functionally paired), and the rotator cuff; a posterior view helps explain why altered scapular position changes subacromial clearance and can coexist with posterior shoulder pain in overhead athletes. At the hip and thigh, the relationship between gluteus maximus, the proximal hamstring tendons, and the lateral thigh fascia informs common patterns of hamstring strain, proximal tendinopathy, and posterior thigh pain that can mimic radicular symptoms. Instructors can drop this plate into gross anatomy and kinesiology lectures on the back, gluteal region, and posterior compartment of the leg, and authors can pair it with chapters on posture, gait, and posterior surgical approaches where surface landmarks guide incision planning.
