Description
Posteriorly, the superficial venous network is traced from the scalp and nuchal region down the back, with veins running along the paraspinal gutters on either side of the vertebral column and converging toward the thorax. In the upper limb, superficial channels consistent with the basilic and cephalic systems course along the medial and lateral aspects of the arm and forearm, joining deeper veins proximally toward the axilla. Inferiorly, prominent superficial pathways follow the posterior thigh and calf before continuing toward the popliteal region and into the deep system, reflecting the general pattern of venous return from the lower extremity. A posterior whole-body venous map helps clarify where superficial veins sit relative to palpable landmarks and where they communicate with deep veins through perforators, a point that matters when teaching venous reflux and varicosities. The back view also supports discussion of venous return against gravity, where calf-muscle pump failure, prior deep vein thrombosis, or incompetent perforators can drive chronic venous insufficiency with edema, skin changes, and ulcer risk around the gaiter area.
