Anterior Basal Segmental Artery of the Right Lung

Description

Arising from the right pulmonary artery at the hilum, the anterior basal segmental artery (A8) courses inferiorly and anteriorly within the lower lobe to enter the anterobasal bronchopulmonary segment. Along its path it runs in close company with the segmental bronchus (B8), while accompanying pulmonary veins occupy a more intersegmental position, converging toward the inferior pulmonary vein. Distal arterioles spread centrifugally toward the peripheral parenchyma, with the vascular tree layered anterior to the more posterior basal segments and inferior to the middle lobe structures. Clear identification of A8 matters when you need segment-level orientation in the right lower lobe, where vascular and bronchial branching can look deceptively similar on CT angiography and during thoracoscopic dissection. Segmentectomy planning often hinges on confirming the correct arterial pedicle and distinguishing it from neighboring basal segmental arteries (A7 to A10), because an anatomic variant or an early common trunk can place the wrong territory at risk for ischemia or incomplete resection. Small errors happen here. Teaching and publication use tends to be practical: correlating bronchopulmonary segment anatomy with pulmonary vasculature in thoracic surgery atlases, radiology modules on lobar and segmental anatomy, and preoperative planning materials for VATS or robotic right lower-lobe segmentectomy (anterobasal segment).
