Description
Running from the right pulmonary artery, the anterior basal segmental artery (A8) descends into the lower lobe toward the anterior portion of the basal segments. Its course lies inferior to the right upper lobe arterial branches and anterior to the posterior basal segmental supply, tracking alongside the segmental bronchus in the usual bronchovascular pairing. Small-caliber arterioles radiate distally toward the alveolar capillary bed, while companion pulmonary veins (blue) collect oxygenated blood and pass more intersegmentally on their way to the left atrium. Trachea and main bronchi sit superior to the cardiac silhouette, anchoring the pulmonary hilum relationships. Segmental pulmonary arterial anatomy matters when you need to localize disease and preserve lung. During VATS segmentectomy of the right lower lobe, A8 is a named target for isolation and division, and confusion with adjacent A7 (medial basal) or A9 (lateral basal) branches can leave an ischemic segment or drive unexpected bleeding at the hilum. Pulmonary emboli often lodge in lower-lobe segmental arteries, and an anterior basal distribution helps correlate CT pulmonary angiography findings with ventilation perfusion defects and with pleuritic pain patterns along the anterior basal pleura. A clean arterial map also clarifies why pulmonary veins do not reliably define segment borders.
