Description
External contours of the female breast are presented over the anterior thoracic wall, with the base extending from the lateral border of the sternum toward the anterior axillary line and from roughly the second to the sixth rib in typical surface anatomy. The nipple-areola complex sits on the anterior surface, usually slightly inferior and lateral to the midpoint of the breast mound, while the inferior breast fold (inframammary crease) marks the transition to the upper abdominal wall. Medially, the breast overlaps the parasternal region, and laterally it approaches the axilla where the axillary tail of Spence may be suggested by the contour. Surface anatomy matters in breast medicine because inspection is often the first step in detecting asymmetry, skin tethering, edema (peau d’orange), or nipple retraction, all of which can reflect underlying malignancy, mastitis, or postoperative scarring. The relationship to the inframammary fold and anterior axillary line also guides incision planning for reduction mammoplasty, mastectomy, and implant placement, and it frames how clinicians describe lesion location by quadrant and clock-face position. Small changes in contour can be the only early clue. Use this artwork for gross anatomy and surface anatomy teaching in medical and nursing curricula, as well as for patient education materials explaining breast examination, screening mammography positioning, or postsurgical expectations after lumpectomy and reconstruction. It also suits textbooks and journals discussing breast aesthetics, anthropometry, and clinical documentation of the female chest wall. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
