Description
Prominent on the anterolateral abdominal wall, the external oblique muscle is shown as the most superficial of the flat abdominal muscles, its inferomedially directed fibers (hands-in-pockets orientation) spanning from the lower ribs superiorly toward the iliac crest and pubic region inferiorly. Medially, the muscle transitions into a broad aponeurosis that contributes to the anterior rectus sheath over the rectus abdominis, with the linea alba forming the midline seam between right and left sides. Superior to the abdominal wall, breast glandular tissue is indicated over the anterior thorax, with adjacent pectoral contours providing regional context. Bony landmarks, including the costal margin and elements of the rib cage, anchor the muscular attachments. Appreciating the external oblique in an anterior female figure helps clarify how its aponeurosis forms the superficial layer of the rectus sheath above the arcuate line and helps shape the inguinal region, where the inferior border rolls to form the inguinal ligament from the anterior superior iliac spine to the pubic tubercle.
