Description
Anterior torso anatomy of a male child is rendered with the abdominal wall made semi-transparent to localize the liver beneath the right costal margin. The right lobe occupies the right upper quadrant, extending medially toward the epigastrium where it abuts the left lobe across the midline, with the inferior border tracking obliquely toward the right hypochondrium. Superiorly, the hepatic dome follows the contour of the diaphragm, while the visceral surface lies inferior and posterior, oriented toward the stomach and proximal duodenum even if those organs are only implied by position. Surface landmarks matter. Pediatric liver size and position differ from the adult pattern, and this view supports teaching of normal developmental anatomy: in children the liver often sits more caudally relative to the costal margin because of thoracic proportions and a less protective rib cage. That relationship becomes clinically relevant during abdominal examination, blunt trauma assessment, and ultrasound acquisition, where a palpable liver edge may be physiologic rather than hepatomegaly. It also frames common pediatric differentials, from hepatitis and biliary atresia to hepatoblastoma, by anchoring pathology to a realistic external silhouette.
