Description
Running along the endocranial surface of the temporal and parietal bones, the middle meningeal vein accompanies the middle meningeal artery between periosteal and meningeal layers of dura mater, then divides into frontal and parietal branches that track the bony grooves. A lateral cut section of the male skull exposes calvarial bone, the adjacent meninges, and superficial cerebral gyri and sulci, with the venous channels rendered in blue against the dural background. Superiorly, the venous drainage trends toward the dural venous sinuses, while inferiorly the vessel courses toward the region of the foramen spinosum and the infratemporal fossa. Hard tissue and soft tissue relationships read clearly. Clinically, this view matters because meningeal vascular channels lie tightly apposed to the inner table, so fractures of the squamous temporal bone can injure the middle meningeal artery and its companion veins, producing extradural (epidural) hematoma with a characteristic lens-shaped collection on CT. Venous injury alone can still contribute to epidural bleeding and to dural arteriovenous fistula formation near the middle meningeal vessels, a scenario encountered in head trauma and in postoperative states. Dural reflections and sinus proximity help orient neurosurgical and interventional approaches.
