Middle Meningeal Vein (Skull), Superior View

Description

Centered within the cranial cavity, the middle meningeal vein is traced in a superior internal view of the skull, coursing between the dura mater and the inner table in close company with the middle meningeal artery along the calvarial grooves. Laterally, its tributaries run over the squamous temporal and parietal regions, then trend medially toward the sphenoparietal sinus and cavernous sinus region, where venous channels converge near the body of the sphenoid. Posteriorly and inferiorly, the dural venous sinuses are also apparent, including the transverse sinus sweeping laterally from the confluence and the sigmoid sinus curving toward the jugular foramen. Bony landmarks such as the greater wing of the sphenoid, petrous temporal ridge, and margins of the foramen magnum orient the viewer in three dimensions. A superior view of the middle meningeal venous system matters because it sits in the same vulnerable plane as the middle meningeal artery, just deep to the pterion and adjacent to the temporomandibular region and squamous temporal bone. Epidural (extradural) hematoma is classically arterial, but venous bleeding from meningeal veins can produce slower, clinically deceptive epidural collections, and these vessels may also provide pathways toward the cavernous sinus and dural venous sinuses in infection or thrombosis.
