Description
Framed by a cut skull section, the middle meningeal vein is traced within the dura mater along the inner table of the temporal and parietal bones, coursing in close company with the middle meningeal artery in the meningeal grooves. Near the pterion, its tributaries run deep to the calvaria and lateral to the cerebral convexity, separated from cortical veins by the meningeal layers. The removed cranial segment exposes the dural lining, the underlying arachnoid, and the brain surface with superficial vessels, clarifying what is dural (meningeal) versus pial. Orientation centers on the lateral cranial vault and sphenoid greater wing region. That pterion relationship matters because it is a thin bony junction where trauma can injure meningeal vessels; while the middle meningeal artery is the classic source for epidural hematoma, the accompanying middle meningeal vein and dural venous channels also contribute to epidural bleeding patterns and dural detachment. For neurosurgical teaching, the illustration helps anchor the distinction between epidural, subdural, and subarachnoid compartments by showing the dura as a cranial lining rather than a brain covering.
