Description

Posterior anatomy of an adult female is rendered from the occiput to the heels, with superficial and selected deeper muscle groups layered alongside major vascular and peripheral nerve pathways. Superiorly, the trapezius spans from the nuchal region toward the acromion and scapular spine, while the latissimus dorsi sweeps inferolaterally from the thoracolumbar fascia toward the humerus, framing the medial border of the scapula over rhomboid territory. Distal to the trunk, the deltoid caps the shoulder laterally, triceps brachii occupies the posterior arm, gluteus maximus dominates the posterolateral pelvis, and the hamstrings descend the posterior thigh toward the knee, with gastrocnemius and soleus forming the posterior calf. Segmental cutaneous nerves and larger named trunks course longitudinally, and arterial and venous channels track in parallel through the neck, upper limb, and lower limb. Posterior views like this earn their keep when you need to teach or plan around the planes surgeons actually traverse, from midline posterior cervical exposure to paraspinal approaches that respect the thoracolumbar fascia and the course of the dorsal rami. Nerve relationships matter here: the radial nerve’s posterior arm trajectory and the sciatic nerve’s deep gluteal course are common reference points when discussing injection safety, posterior hip pain patterns, or iatrogenic injury. Vascular mapping in the same field helps clarify why deep lacerations around the popliteal fossa or posterior shoulder can become urgent quickly. It is a clean road map. Use this artwork in myology and gross anatomy teaching for posterior surface anatomy, in sports medicine materials on hamstring strains and calf injuries, or in surgical education when orienting trainees to posterior approaches of the shoulder girdle, spine, and hip. It also supports patient-facing explanations of radiating pain syndromes by pairing muscle compartments with nerve distributions. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
