Description
Posterior surface anatomy is presented in a female figure with the superficial and selected deeper muscles rendered in anatomical position. Superiorly, the trapezius spans from the occipital region and nuchal ligament toward the lateral clavicle and scapular spine, with the deltoid capping the shoulder and the infraspinatus and teres major lying inferior to the scapular spine along the posterior scapula. The latissimus dorsi sweeps inferolaterally over the thoracolumbar fascia toward the humerus, while the gluteus medius sits superolateral to gluteus maximus at the hip, and the posterior thigh is dominated by biceps femoris laterally with semitendinosus and semimembranosus more medial; the gastrocnemius forms the main calf contour with the Achilles tendon tapering distally to the calcaneus. Portions of the peripheral nervous system are integrated along the posterior limb, tracking in relation to the gluteal region, posterior thigh, and popliteal fossa. Clinical orientation matters here because posterior muscular compartments and their neurovascular relationships drive common examination findings and operative exposure. The course of the sciatic nerve in the deep gluteal region and posterior thigh, and its proximity to the piriformis and hamstring origins, underpins patterns of posterior hip pain, piriformis-related entrapment, and safe planes during posterior approach hip arthroplasty. Palpable landmarks, including the inferior angle of the scapula, iliac crest, ischial tuberosity, and the Achilles tendon, anchor both surface anatomy teaching and injection planning.
