Description
Posterior trunk anatomy is presented with layered back musculature over the vertebral column, centering on the thoracolumbar region. Superficially, the trapezius spans from the midline nuchal region and thoracic spinous processes to the scapular spine and acromion, while latissimus dorsi sweeps inferolaterally from the thoracolumbar fascia and iliac crest toward the humerus. Deeper planes logically include the erector spinae columns (iliocostalis, longissimus, spinalis) flanking the spinous processes, with segmental dorsal rami and their lateral cutaneous branches emerging posterolaterally between muscle slips. Clear midline landmarks. Clinically, this posterior view maps the structures encountered in a midline lumbar approach, where the supraspinous and interspinous ligaments overlie the vertebral canal and the paraspinal muscle mass must be navigated or retracted depending on technique.
