Description
Arising from the right ventricular outflow tract, the pulmonary trunk (truncus pulmonalis) courses superiorly and slightly posteriorly before reaching the level where it will bifurcate into the right and left pulmonary arteries, anterior to the left main bronchus and close to the ascending aorta. The semitransparent cardiac silhouette allows the right ventricle, interventricular septum, and portions of the right atrium to read through the vessel wall, clarifying the trunk’s origin at the pulmonary valve. Along the anterior surface of the heart, the coronary arteries are picked out in warm tones, tracing the right coronary artery in the atrioventricular groove and the left coronary system as it divides into the anterior interventricular (LAD) and circumflex branches. For teaching and clinical correlation, this relationship between the pulmonary trunk and the aortic root is the point, because congenital lesions and acquired pulmonary hypertension alter the caliber and contour of the proximal pulmonary artery and can shift adjacent structures.
