Description
Running obliquely across the anterior thigh, the sartorius is presented as a long superficial strap muscle extending from the anterior superior iliac spine and adjacent notch on the ilium, coursing inferomedially over the rectus femoris and vastus intermedius region, and approaching the medial knee toward the pes anserinus on the proximal tibia. Lateral to its proximal belly, the tensor fasciae latae and iliotibial tract lie along the anterolateral hip and thigh, while medially the adductor longus contour marks the medial compartment. The femur is visible deep to the muscle mass, with the patella and anterior knee joint margin shown distally. Sartorius anatomy matters because it forms the lateral boundary of the femoral triangle, where the femoral nerve lies lateral to the femoral artery and vein, and where vascular access and femoral hernia assessment rely on surface and fascial landmarks. Pain along the medial joint line can reflect pes anserine bursitis or tendinopathy, where sartorius shares a common insertion with gracilis and semitendinosus just inferior to the medial tibial condyle. A classic athletic problem. Proximal strain near the anterior superior iliac spine is common in sprinting and soccer, and this anterior orientation makes it easier to teach how hip flexion with abduction and external rotation recruits the muscle across both hip and knee.
