Description
Running along the anterior thigh, the rectus femoris is isolated within the quadriceps femoris group, superficial and central between vastus lateralis laterally and vastus medialis medially, with vastus intermedius lying deep on the anterior femoral shaft. Proximally, its straight head arises from the anterior inferior iliac spine and its reflected head from the superior rim of the acetabulum, then the muscle belly descends to blend into the quadriceps tendon superior to the patella and continue via the patellar ligament to the tibial tuberosity. In lateral profile on a standing female figure, the rectus femoris contours the anterior hip and thigh, while posteriorly the hamstrings occupy the back of the thigh and the gastrocnemius forms the proximal calf. Clear landmarks. The femur, patella, and knee joint line anchor the muscle’s course from hip to knee. Because rectus femoris crosses both hip and knee, this view helps you teach why it functions as a hip flexor and knee extensor, and why it is often the first quadriceps component to fatigue during repeated sprinting or kicking.
