Description
Centered within the transparent lateral skull, the sphenoid bone is isolated in color, allowing the body with its sella turcica and dorsum sellae to be read against the surrounding cranial base. Anteriorly, the lesser wings contribute to the posterior roof of the orbit, while the greater wings sweep laterally to meet the temporal and frontal bones near the pterion region. Inferior and anterior contours suggest the relationship to the nasal cavity and posterior choanae, with adjacent cranial sutures faintly visible through the calvaria. Clinically, the sella turcica is the key landmark. Pituitary macroadenomas expand the hypophyseal fossa and can erode the sellar floor or extend superiorly toward the optic chiasm, so understanding the sphenoid’s position relative to the orbital apex and anterior cranial fossa helps when correlating symptoms with CT or MRI findings. This lateral perspective also supports surgical orientation for transsphenoidal approaches, where the sphenoid sinus (immediately inferior to the sella) provides the corridor to the pituitary while lateral limits track toward the cavernous sinus and internal carotid artery.
