Description
Seen in lateral profile within a largely transparent male skull, the sphenoid bone is isolated in opaque brown, centered in the middle cranial base between the frontal bone anteriorly and the temporal bone laterally, with the occipital bone posterior to it. Its greater wing spreads laterally toward the squamous temporal and zygomatic region, while the body of the sphenoid sits medial and deep, contributing to the floor of the cranial cavity. Superiorly, its relationship to the anterior and middle cranial fossae is implied even from the side, and inferiorly it aligns above the nasopharyngeal space and posterior to the maxilla. Mandible and upper cervical vertebrae remain visible as translucent context. Orientation is clear. Sphenoid anatomy matters because it is the crossroads for neurovascular pathways and skull base corridors. The greater wing forms part of the lateral wall of the middle cranial fossa and frames key foramina (ovale, spinosum, and the superior orbital fissure region) that transmit the mandibular division of the trigeminal nerve, the middle meningeal artery, and the ophthalmic veins and cranial nerves to the orbit. Endoscopic transsphenoidal approaches to the pituitary pass through the sphenoid sinus within the sphenoid body, and fractures through the sphenoid and adjacent temporal bone can injure the middle meningeal artery or involve the carotid canal region, changing how you interpret basilar skull trauma.
