Description
Arising from the frontal nerve (ophthalmic division of the trigeminal nerve, V1), the supraorbital nerve exits the orbit at the supraorbital notch or foramen along the superior orbital margin and turns superiorly into the forehead. Its medial and lateral branches fan out deep to the frontalis and within the subcutaneous tissues, sending fine terminal filaments posteriorly across the frontal region toward the vertex of the scalp. Surrounding muscular landmarks are apparent, with the temporalis occupying the lateral cranial vault, the masseter inferior and lateral at the mandibular ramus, and the sternocleidomastoid descending obliquely from the mastoid process to the clavicle and sternum. Orientation is clear. For teaching surface anatomy, few structures map as cleanly onto a palpable bony landmark as the supraorbital nerve at the supraorbital rim. That relationship drives clinical practice: local anesthetic placed just superior to the supraorbital notch targets V1 sensory fibers for supraorbital nerve blocks used in forehead laceration repair, endoscopic brow procedures, and perioperative analgesia. It also frames pathology, since entrapment at the notch or irritation after frontal trauma can produce supraorbital neuralgia with pain radiating superiorly over the scalp. Small nerve, big complaints. Use this artwork in head and neck anatomy courses to link trigeminal sensory territories to named peripheral branches, and in surgical texts covering brow lifts, forehead flaps, or craniotomy incisions where preserving the supraorbital neurovascular bundle reduces postoperative numbness.
