Description
Running from the distal femoral region into the foot, the arterial tree is shown as the femoral artery continuing as the popliteal artery posterior to the knee, then dividing into the anterior tibial artery (passing to the anterior compartment to become the dorsalis pedis) and the tibioperoneal trunk giving rise to the posterior tibial and fibular (peroneal) arteries in the deep posterior and lateral compartments. Venous return is contrasted with prominent superficial pathways, the great saphenous vein ascending anteromedially from the dorsal venous arch anterior to the medial malleolus toward the thigh, and the small saphenous vein tracking posterior to the lateral malleolus up the posterior calf to the popliteal fossa. Deep companion veins parallel the named arteries and converge proximally, with dense anastomoses around the genicular region and calf perforators linking superficial and deep systems. Bilateral symmetry is maintained. Understanding this arrangement matters when you are mapping chronic venous disease and its reflux patterns, because incompetent perforator veins and saphenofemoral or saphenopopliteal junction reflux drive varicosities along predictable medial or posterior calf distributions. The knee-level branching and popliteal segment are also practical landmarks for bypass conduit planning and for avoiding iatrogenic injury during popliteal approaches, where the vein lies superficial to the artery in the fossa.
