Description
Running from the distal femoral vessels into the foot, the arterial tree is centered on the popliteal artery in the popliteal fossa, then divides into the anterior tibial artery coursing through the anterior compartment and the posterior tibial artery descending in the deep posterior compartment with the fibular (peroneal) artery laterally along the fibula. Superficial venous channels, typically the great saphenous vein on the medial leg and the small saphenous vein posteriorly in the midline, track toward their junctions with the femoral and popliteal veins, while paired deep veins (venae comitantes) accompany each named artery. Perforating veins connect superficial to deep systems across the deep fascia. Orientation stays true to anatomical position, with medial and lateral compartments clearly implied by the vessel trajectories. For teaching the leg, this arrangement clarifies why pulse points and ischemic patterns localize the way they do: anterior tibial occlusion threatens dorsalis pedis flow, while posterior tibial disease compromises plantar perfusion and heel viability. Venous mapping matters too. Reflux at the saphenofemoral junction and incompetent perforators drive varicose veins and venous stasis changes along the medial malleolus, and the deep calf veins remain the common site for postoperative deep venous thrombosis. A clear arterial and venous contrast makes these correlations immediate.
