Description
Running from the distal femoral artery into the popliteal artery, the arterial tree descends posterior to the knee and divides into the anterior tibial, posterior tibial, and fibular (peroneal) arteries, continuing to the dorsalis pedis on the dorsum of the foot and the plantar arteries on the sole. Blue-coded venous return parallels this course in the femoral and popliteal veins, with tibial venae comitantes in the leg and a prominent superficial great saphenous vein tracking along the medial leg and thigh. Around the popliteal fossa, multiple genicular branches and venous channels interconnect across the posterior aspect of the knee. Color contrast makes the relationships immediate. Popliteal anatomy matters because it is both a crossroads and a choke point. Popliteal artery entrapment, aneurysm, and traumatic injury around the knee can compromise distal perfusion, and this view clarifies why ischemic symptoms may present in the leg or foot even when pathology sits at the posterior knee. Venous mapping also carries direct clinical weight: the great saphenous vein is the usual conduit for bypass grafting and the main superficial pathway involved in varicose veins and saphenofemoral reflux. A tight region. Little margin for error.
