Description
Centered on the anterior knee region of an adult male, the venous network is rendered in blue with the popliteal vein positioned posterior to the joint and the paired anterior tibial veins and posterior tibial veins continuing distally into the leg. Around the femoral condyles, interconnecting genicular veins form an anastomotic ring that communicates superiorly with tributaries of the femoral vein and inferiorly with venous channels along the proximal tibia and fibula. Superficial pathways are suggested by the course of the great saphenous vein along the medial aspect of the knee and the small saphenous vein tracking posterolaterally toward the popliteal fossa, with perforating veins linking superficial to deep compartments. Landmarks matter. For clinicians, the knee is where deep and superficial systems repeatedly cross and rejoin, and that anatomy drives both symptom patterns and procedure planning. Popliteal vein thrombosis can extend from calf deep veins and present with posterior knee fullness or pain, while superficial thrombophlebitis near the medial knee may track along the great saphenous vein and mimic joint pathology. Preoperative mapping for varicose vein treatment and flap or graft planning benefits from seeing the genicular venous anastomoses, since postoperative edema and wound issues often follow disruption of key perforators and draining channels. Use this illustration in vascular anatomy and lower limb musculoskeletal courses to teach venous return from the leg, in surgical atlases covering popliteal fossa exposure and saphenous vein harvesting, and in patient education materials explaining DVT, venous insufficiency, and post-thrombotic syndrome around the knee.
