Description
Centered in the anterior thorax, the sternum (breastbone) is isolated in blue against the remainder of a standing female skeleton, allowing the manubrium, sternal body, and xiphoid process to read as a single midline column. Superiorly, the clavicles meet the manubrium at the sternoclavicular joints, while the first seven ribs curve laterally from their costal cartilages to form the true rib attachments along the sternal margins. Inferiorly, the xiphisternal junction sits just above the costal margin created by ribs 7 to 10, with the vertebral column aligned posterior to the ribcage for clear anteroposterior orientation. Long bones of the upper and lower limbs and the pelvis provide proportional context without competing with the thoracic highlight. For teaching surface anatomy, few landmarks are as practical as the sternal angle (manubriosternal joint), which corresponds to the level of the 2nd costal cartilage and T4 to T5, the starting point for reliable rib counting during chest examination. Trauma and emergency care also depend on this anatomy: sternal fractures and costochondral injuries are assessed relative to the midline sternum, and correct hand placement for CPR targets the lower half of the sternal body while avoiding the xiphoid to reduce risk of hepatic injury. Cardiothoracic surgery trainees will recognize the sternum as the corridor for median sternotomy, with the internal thoracic arteries descending just lateral to the sternal borders. Use this asset in gross anatomy and osteology modules, nursing and paramedic teaching on thoracic landmarks, or as a figure in atlases and patient-facing materials explaining ribcage injuries and post-sternotomy precautions.
