Description
Lateral aspect of the ulna from a human adult male, oriented with the proximal end superior and the distal end inferior, as you would encounter it in anatomical position. Proximally, the olecranon and coronoid process frame the trochlear notch, while the radial notch sits on the lateral side of the proximal ulna to receive the head of the radius at the proximal radioulnar joint. Along the shaft, the interosseous border runs toward the distal third, and the ulnar head and styloid process form the posteromedial contour at the wrist. This lateral perspective is the one you want when teaching how forearm rotation is permitted by the paired radioulnar joints: the radius pivots around a comparatively stable ulna, with the annular ligament securing the radial head against the ulnar radial notch. Subtle changes around the proximal ulna, including irregularity near the radial notch or deformity of the olecranon, matter in Monteggia fracture-dislocations, where ulnar angulation can be accompanied by radial head displacement at the elbow. One bone sets the alignment.
