Description
Seen in lateral profile, the thoracic aorta rises from the left ventricle as the ascending aorta, sweeps posteriorly and superiorly as the aortic arch, then continues inferiorly along the left side of the thoracic vertebral bodies as the descending thoracic aorta. The arch’s convexity faces superiorly, while its concavity passes over the left main bronchus and toward the posterior mediastinum. Within the same field, the rib cage frames the vessel laterally and the vertebral column provides a clear posterior landmark for the descending segment. The abdominal aorta is suggested as the vessel continues inferiorly toward the pelvic inlet. A lateral perspective clarifies relationships that are easy to lose in anterior diagrams, particularly the way the aortic arch crosses the mediastinum and then “hugs” the spine as it descends. That matters in endovascular planning and in teaching coarctation of the aorta, which classically occurs just distal to the origin of the left subclavian artery at the aortic isthmus, a location best appreciated in profile. It also supports discussion of traumatic aortic injury near the isthmus after rapid deceleration, where tethering by the ligamentum arteriosum makes this segment vulnerable. A clean arch silhouette helps.
