Description
Oriented in lateral profile, the male ankle and foot are rendered with the vascular pathways draped over the lateral malleolus and along the dorsolateral aspect of the foot. Red arterial channels descend into the region as the anterior tibial artery continues as the dorsalis pedis artery on the dorsum, while the fibular (peroneal) artery contributes lateral calcaneal branches that course posterior and inferior to the malleolus toward the heel. Blue superficial and deep veins accompany these routes, with dorsal venous tributaries tracking proximally toward the ankle, their course closely related to the extensor tendons and the lateral column of the foot. Lateral vascular anatomy matters when symptoms localize to the dorsolateral foot or when access is required around the ankle, because small variations in dorsalis pedis caliber, perforators, and lateral calcaneal branches can change what you can palpate, cannulate, or inadvertently injure. A common pain generator in this corridor is entrapment or irritation around the extensor retinaculum and talar neck region, and the nearby arterial and venous network becomes relevant during trauma, swelling, or postoperative hematoma. For reconstructive planning, the relationship between the fibular artery perforators and the lateral hindfoot is a key map.
